we need to have good solutions to cards like this so we can print very powerful effects like this and not have to water them down

This plus Blessed Knowledge is infi-card draw, plus Searing Meditation = WIN

I wonder if that is a good thing or a bad thing. We could remove the may so you auto-lose in your upkeep if you put those two together?

Thomas Baker · 2012-05-30 11:16:44

(Without "may" clause) Imagine having both cards in your sealed pool and some good lifegain archetype cards. You want to play both, as they do great things, but you can never put them into play at the same time as you would lose. Awkward. Perhaps we just add a mana cost, same as we did to the auto-win Chaplain guy. Maybe "Whenever you gain life, you may pay 2 to draw a card."

Didn't do enough for me at 2W. When your opponent is curving out spending turn 3 doing nothing is not attractive.

This card is in at least two broken combos. With Blessed Knowledge it allows you to draw 20-30 cards and gain about 20-30 life. Removing the "may" is an interesting way to hose this. With Futurist it allows you to put a card on top of your library draining one and allowing you to draw that card, which you then put back, repeat for infinite life/infinite damage. Needs a cost.

You could theoretically make it work a bit like jar of eyeballs - ie when you gain life put X page counters on it, then in your upkeep remove all the counters, look at that many cards and put one into your hand. Then it would be Phyrexian Arena with an upside provided you were gaining life but would never be an infinite combo.

Kieran Symington · 2012-06-04 07:06:40

Interesting idea. That might be good. Or we could do something more annoying like, "When you gain life if this is the first time you gained life this turn". That could still trigger twice in every turn cycle I guess. What about just "Whenver you gain life put a vitality counter on Vigorous Study. In your upkeep you may remove all vitality counters from Vigorous Study. If you do, draw a card".

I think we can only support this or Vital Librarian at uncommon, probably not both

Simon O'Keeffe · 2012-06-10 11:32:03

utterly utterly busted, and not just because I got rolled over by it :D Suggest several of - limit to once per turn, increase the mana cost, make a creature, increase cmc
