Louis thinks this is broken. Discard, draw, draw, discard, draw. Probably needs changing.

Note from testing written on card: "Silly!"
Thomas Baker · 2012-06-03 22:14:59
Broken because it gives too much filtering for R, or that it gives you loads of looting triggers?
Simon O'Keeffe · 2012-06-03 22:18:13
I think it's just better than (the very good) Faithless Looting all ends up. And in a set that cares even more about looting.
Thomas Baker · 2012-06-03 22:47:32
Can we give it a kind of madness flashback instead of "draw a card"? "If you are discarding a card you can flash this back for nothing". Not sure how to make that work as a flashback cost.
Thomas Baker · 2012-06-04 07:04:48
It would be pretty wordy: "When you discard a card, if Mania Shards is in your graveyard you may cast it without paying its mana cost. If Mania Shards is cast this way exile it"
Kieran Symington · 2012-06-04 07:14:57
Why not just have the Flashback as 'Discard a card' as well?
Kieran Symington · 2012-06-04 08:34:45
I think then it is just bad. Compare Thought Shards which is the better looting with the same Flashback. Might still be OK as a Mindstorm enabler, though?
Thomas Baker · 2012-06-04 09:56:10
Could maybe switch it to have a goes to graveyard from anywhere trigger, although we might have cut that theme from red. Something like: "Discard a card, then draw a card. If ~ is put into a graveyard from anywhere, you may discard a card, then draw a card"
Simon O'Keeffe · 2012-06-04 11:21:16
Having discard as the flashback cost would still draw you a card if you only had one card in hand, making it basically the same flashback cost as Thought Shards but with the upside of the first ability being 'draw a card if you're hellbent'
Kieran Symington · 2012-06-04 12:47:31
So Thought Shards is U for draw, discard, draw (draw 2 discard 1). And Mania Shards is R for discard, draw, discard, discard, draw (draw 2 discard 3). But if you are hellbent Mania Shards is draw, discard, draw (draw 2, discard 1). I'd say that's terrible in comparison but Mindstorm makes me think you might want that. Imagine if your hand was Empty the Libraries, Mania Shards, Mountain, Swamp. Then you cast Mania Shards, discard Mountain, draw Island, discard Swamp to Flashback, discard Island, draw whatever. Then Empty the Libraries for 8 1/1s. I dislike that you have to have two cards "protection" for the spell you want to cast but otherwise this seems pretty handy.
