Hmm I'm thinking these kind of guys may be lazy design and we can make wedge focused cards that are a little more subtle.

Simon O'Keeffe · 2014-04-07 08:17:03

I agree. I much prefer cards where you have to think about what they can do for you and can still be good in a random deck that makes better use of the ability than planned!

Not precisely what you were talking about here but I was listening to one of the later Maro podcasts on Theros and he said that off-color activations are a thing that development really pushed because of the positive effect on draft. For example they added them in Innistrad (which was otherwise ally themed) in the form of the Desperate Ravings, Rally the Peasants, Spider Spawning, Unburial Rites (there isn't a U(G) one?) By the time Theros came around design had started doing it themselves as they'd been convinced of the value for draft. Maro was talking about Scholar of Athreos at the time which is a cool card although borderline completely unplayable without B so maybe not the best example. I am keen to try Esper Battlemage-style wedge battlemages and also some monocolor cards with off-color activated abilities or something similar. Not quite what you are talking about here but somewhat relevant!

Well perhaps we can revisit what I call the bleed cards (Ribbons of Night style). These allow us to cross the borders of colours without forcing multicolour or tricolour activations. Or we could just design cards with straight up off-colour activations, maybe even your old monocolour cards with enemy pair activations (Angelheart Zombie or something) from the first go at wedges. Those at least retain a hefty wedge feel.

(Playtesting) This guy is real good with Formation. Turning my unexciting 2/4 flyer into three 1/1s who then all got +2/+2 for 9 power of guys was pretty strong for turn 6.

Simon O'Keeffe · 2014-04-16 09:19:31

This ability is pretty powerful for a common. Mini Overrun is quite strong I hear.

Kieran Symington · 2014-04-16 16:50:20

Seems to be relevant again

Although it is flavorfully kind of weird to pump half of a twin. "Target creature and all creatures that share a name with it get X until end of turn"?

Thomas Baker · 2014-05-26 21:40:54

The idea I had for a similar card was "creatures you control that share a name with another creature on the battlefield". That could work here, even if it is a little long!

Kieran Symington · 2014-05-26 21:46:36

This guy won a stalled game in combination with the White "do nothing" guy that makes a 1/1. Perhaps Kieran's twin pump would be better?
