Okay a bit crazy rules wise, and probably doesn't even work with Immolate . Original version may be more interesting: "When ~ dies, it deals 1 damage to each opponent and each creature they control. Gain life equal to the damage dealt this way."

This seems really strong. For anything that cares about it dying - from simple chump blocking to Immolate - this is the equivalent of six creatures, and the first 3 deaths don't even reduce its total power. It also effectively makes Blood Drinker and friends immediately lethal most of the time (+12/+12 by itself!) Also I'm not convinced the rules work. If it's dying to damage it doesn't remove the damage and if it's dying to a -x/-x effect it stays at 0 toughness so it just dies all three times!

Hmm I was thinking that sacrificing it would still work and just put it directly in the graveyard: 701.14a To sacrifice a permanent, its controller moves it from the battlefield directly to its owner’s graveyard. A player can’t sacrifice something that isn’t a permanent, or something that’s a permanent he or she doesn’t control. Sacrificing a permanent doesn’t destroy it, so regeneration or other effects that replace destruction can’t affect this action. Now that I look at the rules for "dies" I see that is not the case: 700.4. The term dies means “is put into a graveyard from the battlefield. Probably too complicated for its own good.

Okay a simple wording change may fix it.

Simon O'Keeffe · 2014-06-26 14:34:02

I think it still has issues with dying to damage and toughness-reducing effects since its replacement effect doesn't remove the damage or effect. So the only time it won't immediately become 3 spirits now is if your opponent targets it with a destroy target creature effect!

Hmm you are right. Some in depth looks into comp rules indicates that damage keeps piling up even on indestructible creatures, and is only removed on the cleanup step at end of turn. Feels like too many words are required to make it work cleanly, certainly for an uncommon.

Simon O'Keeffe · 2014-06-26 16:50:09

Okay, scrapping the old idea, and going with something you have to work harder to get to work.

Maybe this should actually also have flying? 90% of the time his "soulspilling" won't ever actually trigger and he will just be an Air Elemental with a more awkward cost.

consolidation of token types

We still have 1/1 spirit in the rare W land but that might get cut.
